The Slow Burn
Is this you?
- No single thing sets you off — it's the pile-up. By evening, everything irritates you.
- Your fuse gets shorter as the day goes on: the same comment that's fine at 9am makes you snap at 6pm.
- You're often tense, impatient, or on edge without a clear reason.
- People get the sharp end of a day that had nothing to do with them.
If two or three of those land, you're in the right place. This is a pattern to work with, not a verdict on who you are.
What's actually happening
The Slow Burn isn't one big emotion — it's accumulation. Small stresses, unmet needs, background noise, one demand stacked on another. Each one is minor. None of them gets discharged. And a nervous system that never fully resets stays half-switched-on all day.
So by the time something "sets you off," it isn't really that thing. It's the whole stack — and that thing just happened to land on top. The work here isn't about the final straw. It's about the load underneath: reading it early, and letting pressure out in small amounts before it reaches the top.
One thing you can do right now — The Pressure Check
You can't release pressure you haven't noticed. Most Slow-Burn people only check in when they're already at the top. So check earlier, on a schedule.
Three times a day — mid-morning, mid-afternoon, early evening — pause for thirty seconds and ask: where's my simmer right now, 0 to 5? (0 = calm, 5 = about to snap.)
If it's 3 or higher, do a two-minute release before carrying on:
1. Change your state physically — stand up, step outside, move, shake out your hands. A simmer lives in a still, tense body.
2. One long exhale, repeated — five slow breaths, out longer than in.
3. Drop one thing — cancel, postpone, or say no to one demand in the next hour. Take one weight off the stack.
That's it. You're not waiting for the boil-over anymore; you're bleeding pressure off while it's still low. Use a timer at first — the whole point is catching it before you would have noticed on your own.
Already boiled over and need to come down now? Go straight to the SOS steps.
