The Flashpoint
Is this you?
- You go from fine to furious in seconds — there's almost nothing in between.
- It bursts out fast, often louder or sharper than you meant.
- It burns out just as quickly, and then the regret arrives.
- Afterwards you think: where did that come from? — even though a minute ago it felt completely justified.
If two or three of those land, you're in the right place. This is a pattern to work with, not a verdict on who you are.
What's actually happening
Explosive anger isn't a character flaw or a lack of willpower. It's a fast alarm system doing its job a little too well.
When your brain reads a threat — being disrespected, blocked, cornered, caught off guard — it can fire the alarm before the thinking part of you gets a vote. That's why it feels like zero-to-a-hundred with nothing in between.
But there is something in between. A gap. Half a second wide at first — the sliver of time between the spark and the fire. Everything on this page is about finding that gap and slowly widening it, until it's big enough to make a choice inside.
One thing you can do right now — "Catch the spark"
Your anger has a tell: one physical signal that fires first, a beat before the rest of it. Learn yours, and it becomes an early-warning light.
Step 1 — Find your spark. Think back to the last flare. What did your body do first? A clenched jaw. Heat in your face or chest. Fists. A held breath. Pick the one that shows up most. That's your spark.
Step 2 — Treat it as a trip-wire. The instant you feel it next time, do these three things, fast, in this order:
1. Name it — one word, to yourself: "Spark." Naming it hands the wheel back to your thinking brain.
2. One long exhale — longer than the breath in. That's the brake on the alarm.
3. Open your hands, unlock your jaw. The body leads; the feeling follows a second later.
That's the whole technique. You've just put a gap between the spark and the fire — and the gap is where your choices live. It won't feel natural the first few times. It gets faster every time you use it.
