The Loop

Is this you?
- The moment's over, but you're still in it — hours or days later, still replaying it.
- You rehearse conversations that already happened, or ones that never will.
- A grudge can sit with you for weeks, and you can pick it back up in seconds.
- You know going over it doesn't help, and you can't seem to stop anyway.

If two or three of those land, you're in the right place. This is a pattern to work with, not a verdict on who you are.

What's actually happening

Rumination feels like problem-solving, but it isn't. Real problem-solving reaches a next step and stops. The Loop just circles — the same scene, the same injustice, the same "I should have said." It gives you the feeling of doing something about it while changing nothing.

There's a reason it grips: an unresolved wrong keeps your threat system switched on, and the mind keeps returning to it looking for an exit that replaying will never provide. The way out isn't to win the argument in your head. It's to notice you're circling, break the loop, and either turn it into one real action or set it down.

One thing you can do right now — The Loop Break

The loop runs on autopilot, in the background, until suddenly an hour is gone. The break is to make it conscious, then redirect it.
Three moves:

1. Name it. Say it plainly, to yourself: "I'm looping." Naming it pulls you out of the scene and back to now — you can't be inside the replay and watching it at the same time.
2. Ask one question. "Is there an action here — or only a replay?" If there's a real next step, write it in one line and let the rest go. If it's only a replay, there's nothing to solve; the loop is lying about being useful.
3. Move it. Rumination can't survive genuine engagement. Do something absorbing and physical for ten minutes — a walk, a task, anything that takes real attention. Or, if now isn't the time, park it: "Not now. I'll take this up at 6pm." A parked loop loses most of its grip.

That's the break. It won't feel like closure the first few times — it feels like interrupting yourself, which is exactly the skill. Every interruption makes the groove a little shallower.

In a fresh flare and need to come down now? Go straight to the SOS steps.
