The Cause
Is this you?
- Unfairness, dishonesty, or people doing wrong lights a fire in you that's hard to put out.
- Your anger often feels righteous — and often it genuinely is.
- You can get pulled into every battle, until you're exhausted and everything is a fight.
- It can spill over: the point was right, but it took over the room and wore you down.
If two or three of those land, you're in the right place. This is a pattern to work with, not a verdict on who you are — and to be clear, the anger here is often the appropriate response.
What's actually happening
The Cause isn't a malfunction. Anger at injustice is one of the oldest and most useful signals we have — it's what makes people speak up, protect others, and refuse to accept what shouldn't be accepted. If you feel it strongly, that usually means your values are strong and intact.
The trouble isn't the fire; it's what the fire does when it's unaimed. Unaimed, it rages at things you can't change, turns every issue into a battle, curdles into contempt, and burns you out — until you're too depleted to be effective on the things that actually matter. The work here isn't to care less or calm down. It's to aim: to spend your fire where it does real work, and protect it from being wasted.
One thing you can do right now — Aim the Fire
Your anger is often right, so the point isn't to put out the fire. It's to aim it, so it does work instead of burning you. Three moves:
1. Name the value. Ask what's actually being violated — fairness, honesty, respect, someone being harmed. Naming it confirms the anger is real, and tells you what you're fighting for, not just what you're against.
2. Check control. Ask: is this mine to act on, and is there something I can actually do? Righteous anger loves to rage at what it can't move — and that's the fastest road to burnout.
3. Aim one thing, or set it down. If there's a real action, pick the single most effective one and do that — not ten reactive ones. If it's genuinely out of your hands, set it down on purpose: not because it doesn't matter, but because your fire is worth spending where it counts.
That's the whole move — from a flare that consumes you to a fire that does work. You don't have to care less. You have to aim better.
